A user-friendly hike with old chums, after-the-jump ...
But first: Top Comments appears nightly, as a round-up of the best comments on Daily Kos. Surely ... you come across comments daily that are perceptive, apropos and .. well, perhaps even humorous. But they are more meaningful if they're well-known ... which is where you come in (especially in diaries/stories receiving little attention).

I have hiked parts of the Appalachian Trail (hence the reference to the 1997 book by Bill Bryson) as well as some local rail trails in more recent years. Hikers know that trail maintenance can vary widely — with volunteers doing their best, yet often unable to truly keep up with erosion, flooding and even washouts: signs reading Detour → … or even worse:
That’s why it was so different for my Thanksgiving trip to visit family and old chums, with only enough time for a quick visit to hike on a well-maintained N.Y. State park: the Bayard Cutting Arboretum (which I hadn’t been to in decades).
This was built by Frederick Law Olmsted (who designed both Central Park in NYC as well as linking several green areas of Boston). Wealthy financier William Bayard Cutting (1850-1912) hired Olmsted to provide the green spaces around his 900 acre plot and also hired architect Charles Haight to build a mansion for him.
Today: housing offices, a restaurant, gift shop and more
His descendants deeded the land to NY state (with some restrictions) in the 1930’s, and under state ownership: its many hiking trails are well-maintained. Some have excessive tree roots and hidden stones apt to lose one’s balance — yet with a relatively flat course, it’s not difficult. Out of season, there is no parking fee (as the gardens and trees facing the oncoming winter).
Yet it’s the company that makes for an enjoyable hike.
I go back ½ a century with most of these folks
And to cap-it-off: an excellent dinner. Yours truly upper-right, my brother Pat across from me (he just joined us for dinner).
When I’m on a new trail by myself … this 1964 classic often fills my head.

And from Ed Tracey, your faithful correspondent this evening ........
In the diary by Merlin196360 about the rapid expansion of ICE agents leading to unqualified and incompetent hires — anon004 aptly attributes this debacle less to Kristi Noem, and more instead to Stephen Miller … who stays out of the limelight and lets others take the hits.
And lastly: yesterday's Top Mojo - mega-mojo to the intrepid mik ...... who rescued this feature from oblivion:
